These senior college students from George Mason University decided to celebrate their graduation with senior pictures at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. It’s a fantastic place for a graduation photoshoot! Sure parking may be a little inconvenient (the girls took Uber), there may be a lot of people (and photographers) jockeying for position at some of the prime shooting locations, but the Lincoln Memorial is a large space and there are always nooks and places where we can grab a few images without disturbing anyone or being disturbed.
After nearly a year with a few random photoshoots here and there, I am overjoyed to be busy again, sharing in the excitement and happiness of young adults at these important transitional moments in their lives.
The Lincoln Memorial is modeled after the Parthenon, a former temple dedicated to Athena on the Acropolis in Greece. The imposing forty-four foot Doric columns (one for each of the 36 states in the Union at the time of President Lincoln’s assassination) make a gorgeous backdrop for photos, and the light Colorado marble reflects and bounces light beautifully.
The steps of the Lincoln Memorial have been used for historical moments like Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech as well as common every day moments like tourists taking selfies and local fitness instructors holding fitness classes on them. And, professional photographers taking senior pictures of college graduates!
The George Mason students wore white and brought their graduation caps, gowns, and stoles. We were able to get a variety of graduation photographs of them individually and together all around the Lincoln Memorial.
Senior Pictures at the Lincoln Memorial
For the past few years, the National Park Service has been charging around $150 for a commercial photography permit to allow photographers to shoot on the grounds of our nation’s monuments and memorials. However, the policy has been in flux after a February 2021 court ruling. For the latest updates to the policy check this page. Without the hefty and burdensome permit requirements, now is a perfect time to book senior pictures at the Lincoln Memorial!
